On December 20, 2011 – just eleven days after relieving David Bennett of his duties as head football coach – Coastal Carolina has introduced Joe Moglia as the man they have chosen to lead the program into the future. Coach Moglia will be the man that will lead us to national championships and fill our stands. At least…our AD, Hunter Yurachek, had better hope so. Those are the goals he set out for his new hire right after firing David Bennett. The opinion I expressed in the article about the firing of Coach Bennett was, “Whoever the next coach is had better be ready to fill some big shoes and fill them fast. Also, Coastal better not bring in a inexperienced head coach after saying they want to win a national championship. Their hire had better match their rhetoric. We are expecting a national championship at Coastal Carolina.”
So, what did Coastal Carolina do – did they go out and get a coach who has been a proven winner at the college level? The answer is no. Joe Moglia is the CEO of Ameritrade. He did coach football this season, leading the UFL’s Omaha Nighthawks to a dazzling 1-4 record.
To be fair, Mr. Moglia spent 13 years as an assistant coach from 1970-1983, winning a couple of Ivy League titles while DC at Dartmouth. He got back into coaching by becoming an executive advisor to the head coach at Nebraska (Bo Pelini), an unpaid position. He then took over as the Omaha Nighthawks head coach last season.
Guys, in my opinion – this is a big gamble by the AD and President. If it works, then they will be heroes – if it doesn’t, they are probably both going to be fired along with coach Moglia. I hope for their sakes they have all their eggs in the right basket.
